Also check out the Smithville School in Silver Spring (East Randolph Rd)! It’s a historic Black schoolhouse from 1927 that was saved and beautifully restored by the local Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. They turned it into a community museum

It's my first time learning about this school, and it's right here in Montgomery County where I live! I'm not surprised by the "sundown" information; I actually found that out about Montgomery County a long time ago just by looking it up on Wikipedia. I make it a point to visit historical Black history sites in Montgomery County and other parts of Maryland, and I tend to avoid any known "sundown" areas that don't have a large Black population, because that tells me something too. 🧐 #School #History #County

There was supposed to be two sides to Chevy Chase in 1904 but that was stopped. An affluent side for black ppl but you know who didn’t want that

Is it just me? Or have you ever wondered how many of our ancestors ran through the woods when you’re on 95? God knows I definitely have felt in certain parts of Maryland (like Fredrick, Hagerstown, the part that borders WV and Harrisburg, PA).

I believe it’s Button Farm in Germantown that have actual slaves buried there with stone rock markers that just looks like rocks scattered around. Montgomery county has a rich history of black slaves and free blacks. Tobeytown Potomac was stolen from them.

The Boyds historical society meets here they are very nice people. Right now they are fighting for restoration and preservation of the historically black church that’s on the same road. It’s called st. Marks. Reach out to them and ask if you can help with the efforts! History needs to be preserved !

Montgomery County doesn’t feel like a sundown town. It’s a very diverse county. It’s as much your county as it is anybody’s. Never forget that

Thank you for sharing this! Black stories need to be preserved and shared. Also, Laytonsville is a sundown town they have a road called Sundown rd. It’s truly chilling how it all gets covered up unless you dig
