This disaster was triggered by an ice avalanche blocking a river channel and causing a glacial lake to overflow on the Nepalese side. The 2015 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Nepal further loosened the mountains in the region, leaving numerous cracks and loose rock masses. During the rainy season, rainwater seeps into these cracks, and once the mountains become saturated, they are highly susceptible to collapse and mudslides. This, coupled with global warming causing glacial melting, and the fact that the disaster originated in Nepal, preventing China from implementing engineering measures abroad, all contributed to the formation of the mudslide.
