Things to know BEFORE getting hermit crabs, especially for your kids as a present!🎁 1. Hermit crabs are expensiveeeee. They may be marketed as easy and low maintenance, but don’t be fooled. When PROPERLY taken care of, they will cost you hundreds and hundreds of dollars over time. Make that thousands after 8+ years 🤪 2. They can live 50 years! These guys are a commitment. Welcome to a new life long relationship that you want to make sure thrives!! 3. Hermit crabs are nocturnal and natural animals of prey. They hide and sleep during the day, and are active at night. We don’t want them to feel scared, stressed, or like we are predators, so best to let them be! Overtime they can become more comfortable and you’ll start to see them explore more during the day- it also just depends on their personality:) 4. Hermit crabs can get lonely, don’t have just one. The thrive with companions, in the wild they travel in colonies! Rule of thumb is 10 gallons of space per hermit crab, 20 gallon minimum even if just 1 (which you shouldn’t only have 1 anyways). so for example, if you have 4 hermit crabs, then 40 gallon tank minimum. Important to note: have lots of animal protein and complete meals for their diet, lots of shells of various sizes, and lots of hiding and climbing space so they can comfortably share resources and not feel need to compete for resources for survival. 5. They are omnivores which means they need lots of animal protein in their diet! A complete meal consists of animal and plant protein, calcium, fat, fruits / veggies / harvestables. Around half of their meals ingredients should consist of protein ingredients, and majority of those protein ingredients being animal protein. 6. Even if you get them for your kids, they will most likely become your responsibility (financially too!), so make sure you are ready yourself to become a hermit crab parent! 7. Majority of what is sold in pet stores for hermit crabs is incorrect or not safe for them, so don’t waste your money! I have lots of helpful links for proper hermit crab care and supplies in my bio to put you on right track. 8. Adopt don’t shop! Don’t buy hermit crabs from the pet stores / beach shops if you can help it. That fund and perpetuates the cruel industry, demanding more hermit crabs be taken from the wild and forced into the pet trade. I have adoption and rehoming links in my bio instead!
