When life gives you lemons, make them into wine.   That’s what I did last Thursday night. I’d planned to meet up with a friend, and unfortunately, she fell ill after I’d already arrived at our chosen meeting place. These days, I don’t often find myself alone at a bar. Not many young women do. Strangely, it almost feels taboo. But my parking meter was paid for, and Boston traffic had put an hour between me and home. More importantly, I was wearing a nice sundress, and it was a warm night in the middle of July. I couldn’t let such an evening go to waste.   I made myself comfortable at Zusammen, which isn’t very hard to do. An eclectic natural wine bar in Cambridge, Zusammen is warm and inviting, with a cozy wood-paneled bar, grand piano, and music drifting out of colorful jukebox. Their menu boasts an expansive wine list, as well as an impressive selection of vermouth. Alongside wine, they offer batched cocktails, single-spirit pours, and a small but intentional snack menu. I sat at the bar, where I sipped on a Lebanese orange wine, flipped through magazines, and small talked with two lovely bartenders, Erica and Cosetta, who made me feel right at home.   After responsibly capping myself at two glasses of wine, I popped into Momma’s Grocery + Wine next door, Zusammen’s sister market, to gather a few essentials: two fresh heirloom tomatoes, a bouquet of purple delphiniums, local mozzarella and chocolate milk, two more bottles (a red and a white) of my favorite sweet vermouth (Poderi Oddero Vermouth del Kamerlengo from Piedmont, Italy), and a funky orange wine from Chile that I’m currently obsessed with (No Es Pituko).   While my plans fell through, it ended up being the perfect evening of solitude. Maybe I should do this kind of thing more often. If you’re thinking about doing the same, Zusammen is certainly a great place to start.
