If you have to ADD product for your hair to curl its not curly. Water is the product for curly hair. All the other stuff is to moisturize, define, and control the frizz of a curl.

As a white girl with curls who straightened my hair for YEARS because of people making fun of it, I’m PISSED at how it’s suddenly “cool” to have curly hair now

Cosmetologist here! Unfortunately if you have straight hair no amount of products or scrunching is going to hold a curl/wave also when you brush out 2a-3a hair when it’s wet, it’s going to look straight, until it dries and then it’s frizzy again because they naturally have texture to their hair. I think where the confusion comes in is people with wavy hair get it confused for curly and maybe that’s where I can understand why people get upset? But even then it’s a completely false narrative that they are “forcing their curls” because you can’t force that unless it’s with heat. Hope this helps

You can’t force a curl unfortunately😭 if your hair is wavy and you do all that and it’s curly but then the curls go down after abt an hour or so and it looks ugly and just WAVY then it’s wavy but if it stays curly and has CURLS then their hair is curly😭 they put all that so their hair isn’t frizzy I thought everyone knew that but I guess not

Okay so this is my nuanced but not really take as a licensed cosmetologist: if you can put product such as curl creams, mousses, gels, water, etc in your hair, scrunch it, let it dry, and it’s curly? You have natural curls. To SOME degree. The issue is that a lot of people in the 2’s and such don’t realize that those are the products and techniques they have to use to achieve that look. Now, the MAIN issue I have is that people on the internet like that are trying to push black people out of their OWN community by claiming that coils aren’t curls. Which is baffling to me because trying to make curls a nonblack thing genuinely makes zero sense. And we see this constantly. Obviously not just in hair. This has been happening for way too long. We can’t have shit and it’s tiring.

And it is that deep, especially when hair is a “legal loophole” for schools, employers, etc can use to discriminate against race. The crown act wasn’t even around until 2019, and I think only like 30 states have something like it. I get sooo annoyed about the “waves are type of curl” too it’s intentionally obtuse and weaponized to take over spaces they feel left out of or whatever. To make trends out of discrimination is the true death of empathy. Signed a white wavy hair girlie

Also the people being blatantly obtuse trying to say type 4 is NOT curly just pushes your topic more. type 4 is being pushed out of the curly hair movement to make room for forced curls to be the “ideal” type. the gentrification is insane

Using products to make your hair more defined and gel to make sure the curls last thats not forcing your hair thats using products to ENHANCE your curls yes sometimes theres people with wavy hair saying its curly. finger coiling and and brush styling isnt forcing it’s helping the curls to naturally form, also theres six different types of curly hair idk why your expecting to see only black women or only see one hair type

babe you can’t make hair curly with products…you just enhance the curls… yes it’s really curly. you can’t “force” curls. if their hair wasn’t curly it wouldn’t hold. hope that helps

Isn’t putting products in your hair supposed to help your curls? Isn’t this just taking care of your hair? I don’t have curls so if I did their routine it wouldn’t work,… it only works because their hair is curly… to me, it seems more demented to be so angry about people who don’t have the curly hair you like

As a white woman with curly hair you’re absolutely right. If your hair can’t air dry with no products in it and make a curl, it’s not curly, and to ignore or push aside the opinions of black women when it comes to curls is absolutely crazy.

omg enough of this!!!!! girls with actual natural curly hair can still use products and a brush to make the natural curls look BETTER. as a white girl, if i put only water in my hair, it curls up naturally. but i still use product in my hair to help with frizz and hold. but my hair is still CURLY.
