@edokingdomtales: Long before modern Benin City took its present form, the Ero lineage was already part of the ancient political structure of the Benin Kingdom. According to Benin oral tradition, during the reign of Ogiso Ere, Ero was one of the great elders who served among the Edion Nisen, the powerful council of senior nobles who advised the Ogiso. Alongside Oliha, Edohen and Eholo N’Ire, Ero became associated with one of the most important institutions in the early Benin state. But the story of Ero did not end there. Tradition says that generations later, an Ero known as Omokhua Ero left the family’s earlier settlement at Ugbekun and established the Ero’s permanent seat at Urubi. From that time, the title became strongly identified with its new home: ERO N’URUBI — Ero of Urubi. Urubi was not simply a place of residence. It became the Ero’s traditional court and domain. The Ero was one of the powerful chiefs whose authority extended into the political, military and traditional affairs of the kingdom. The Ero family also carries one of the most fascinating ancestral greetings in Benin: “LAMOSUN.” The traditional explanation connects this greeting with Osun, associated with herbs and traditional healing. The story says that an ancestor of the Ero lineage brought Osun back to Benin during a time of crisis and helped restore the wellbeing of the people. The memory of this act became preserved in the family’s ancestral greeting, Lamosun. But Ero’s importance went beyond healing. The Ero became one of the traditional guardians of the Benin monarchy and was among the senior chiefs whose authority mattered in questions concerning the kingdom and its succession. Centuries later, that tradition of defending the throne was dramatically demonstrated by Chief Izedomwen Ero following the death and exile of Oba Ovonramwen. During the succession crisis of 1914, when the British colonial administration was attempting to determine the future political leadership of Benin, Izedomwen Ero opposed the idea of making Agho Obaseki the Oba. He stood for the traditional principle that the throne should pass through the royal line. The eventual installation of Oba Eweka II marked the continuation of the Benin dynasty. From the ancient Edion Nisen, through the establishment of the Ero’s seat at Urubi, to the political struggles of the twentieth century, the history of Ero N’Urubi is a story of lineage, tradition, political authority and loyalty to the Benin throne.
