all u guys talking abt being well rounded but if you had a philosophy major you'd be mad as hell doing 12 hours of math a week 😭 let the girl complain oml

Gen Ed requirements in the US baffle my brain, here we just do classes relating to the course we applied for. All of the general education is covered in secondary school up to 18, higher education is for your desired career.

College professor here! Notice how she said 12 hours a week reading. that's not including assignments, projects, studying for potential exams, or actually sitting in class. For a 3 credit hour philosophy class.
Now let's take this and multiply by a full course load, which in college is 15 credit hours. If every professor had the same expectations, you'd be looking at 60 hours of reading a week. Before everything else.
Oh wait, you're an engineer, and an ACTUAL course load they expect you to take is closer to 17-19 credit hours a semester, so on average that would be 72 hours of reading a semester.
The point I'm trying to make is that a common problem I see other professors make, is they forgot every other course exists and think their workload is reasonable when, if every professor did what they did, you'd be dead. You made the right call IMO

They are all hating on you like colleges don’t do this stuff so you spend more money with extra classes 😭 high school was about well rounding college is for a specific career

I certainly would want engineers to understand philosophy and ethics, and generally have a well rounded education, but maybe that’s just me

people are genuinely acting like you can’t take a different class that will fulfill the same graduation requirement that fits your schedule better and interests you more. surprise everyone i’m an engineer major that waited to take my biology class because i wanted to take the entomology option!

why would anyone not want to fully educate themselves and ignore the subject with the most available knowledge

i don’t think people realize how difficult and time consuming engineering school already is. it’s hard to have THAT much time to dedicate to a gen ed.

I mean, yeah, if you don't want to meet the degree's requirements & be a well-rounded academic, then you should probably consider a different program.

Philosophy can be very important to engineering, you learn ethics and to be curious about the why behind things.

Liberal arts majors should be required to take a couple of engineering/tech classes since engineers are forced to take humanities.

the same reason we learn to pick shit apart in high-school english. what is seemingly a waste of time is actually incredibly fundamental for learning, critical thinking, and application. you need a well rounded curriculum to be well educated

I am an engineer and I never took philosophy. In order to be an accredited engineering program - they will touch on ethics in a core class at some point. You will be fine.

The most interesting thing to me in this comment section is that people are acting like philosophy and ethics are the same thing. A philosophy class would teach you multiple philosophies… which will all contradict each other and not all be grounded in the constraints of reality 😭

Why are people acting like engineering isn’t insanely difficult? Why would you waste so much time and energy on a class you don’t need. Ppl just love belittling others.

I feel like they should have an Ethics of Engineering class instead of a general philosophy class. Gets people their moneys worth and engages students.
