being good at something and loving something are two very different things. I'm great at sales and people around me would probably say I love it. but in reality I'm just good at the job.

He didn’t love it the most, that’s the entire point of it. He originally did it to get back at his brother and discovered he was one of the best at it, so it was a coping mechanism to deal with his insecurity. He says during the AA meeting it’s the one thing he found that he wasn’t just good at but the best at. He never “loved” it it gave him nightmares, anxiety, ulcers, stupid levels of stress etc. His love of food was because he always felt it connected him to his brother and when he decided he was going to be the best at it, it was to get BACK at his brother. Once Mikey was gone Carm realized he never loved cooking in the way he was doing it and so he quit to free himself of it. Maybe he loved it at one point but he doesn’t anymore and he doesn’t want to do it just out of feeling responsibility to Mikey. He’s gotta move on with his life, Mikey’s not coming back and he finally realized that

I played cello and piano for over ten years when I graduated high school I never picked up an instrument or played one again i don’t see the point in continuing something im good at if I don’t have the passion for it.

You missed their was no love behind his culinary skills he was motivated to show people he was good at it. Cooking drove him into madness that’s why he quit.

I did the same thing. Had a similar trajectory and all. Sometimes you have to leave what you love to see what’s worth it anymore. With all the limited time on this earth it’s best to always choose you. I have since come back to kitchens, but it’s taken sooo long and a lot of compromise

I cook professionally in real life, & ive worked at some of the kitchens shown in the series. eleven madison, the laundry, le bernardine, alinea. and I like your depiction and highly relate to it. I recently left michelin kitchens to become a private chef. 100 hour weeks for 13 years changes you. and I relate to what you said. I, too, never left the kitchen i just left the version of me that enjoyed that chaos and being so locked in that I was losing myself. I loved it. but now doing what im doing now, I found what I love the most to still be a constant but now in a calm environment. no chaos, just colors and food and creation.

If you took the show that way fine… but the end left up to your interpretation as a viewer but do you really think he left after he basically told the architect interviewer how much he loves the kitchen… don’t make this an excuse to sulk carmy is 100 percent still in that kitchen

I believe he went back, I think the monologue was him realizing he still loves the bear and the people. Although they didn’t show it I’d like to believe he did.

went to culinary, I worked for 15 years in this industry, and now I am studying to become a nurse. I love restaurants,ive managed a few but to have a healthy, happy life with kids and a home the restaurant business makes those things hard to have.
