Africa ranks globally as one of the hardest places in the world to build and scale a business and it shows. Would Elon Musk have succeeded in building the companies he did in an environment where electricity was unreliable, capital was scarce, regulations unpredictable, markets fragmented and infrastructure weak. We must realize, talent does not operate in a vacuum. Entrepreneurs need an environment that allows them to thrive: reliable infrastructure, access to capital, predictable policies, functioning institutions, large markets, technology, and systems that reward innovation.. Africans are told to “work harder,” “think bigger,” and “be innovative.” But perhaps we also need to ask: What kind of environment are we creating for our innovators? Because you can plant the best seed in the world. If the soil is hostile, the seed may never become the tree it was capable of becoming. Africa does not only need more entrepreneurs. Africa also needs better environments for entrepreneurs to thrive, else we will build an Africa where our best minds must leave to become their best selves. The goal should be to build an Africa where ambition can find infrastructure, ideas can find capital, talent can find opportunity, and innovation can find an ecosystem.
