There’s no room for nuance anymore. 😭 It’s like you either cannot criticize her AT ALL or you have to be really mean and scathing and say you hate her. I feel like this is a reflection of a larger culture shift to absolute extreme black and white thinking, but maybe that is just me.

right like i don’t understand why it’s such a big deal 😭 even if you’re coming from a neutral/logical place with your criticism, the diehards will come back with just straight up cruelty lol. this same situation happened when rep came out but even that wasn’t at the level that the showgirl discourse is. i’ve ended up distancing myself so much, not just bc i didn’t like the album but mostly because of fans disingenuously defending it. it’s not giving “i love the album so i’m gonna stand on it”, it’s giving “if you don’t love the album you’re a fake fan and we all hate you”.

Yeah, I’m with you on this one. I certainly don’t hate her. I really enjoy her entire discography… except for TLOAS. People get so upset that anyone has a critique of that album. It’s wild.

I also think it’s important to remember this album came out during a very politically charged time. In a time where she had miss americana and then was appearing to be quiet with politics. Before anyone comes for me I’m not asking her to do anything just saying that on top of lyrics like cancelled and this over glamour of brands during an economic distress is also part of why it felt unreadable. Not her fault but the time in society plays a role I think.

that's fine if you don't like it, criticism is completely valid. I think people get defensive as the release week was so insane and there was no need for it. even now she's being called things she isn't and I think it's hard to see that

I’m a lifelong fan, too, and also really disliked the album. I’m also not a fan of how she’s been moving over the last year and a half. The cult level with which many fans refuse to critique her and villainize anyone who does is frankly scary.

The idea that Taylor has a “Fuck you” attitude and doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her anymore can be quickly disproven by her latest interviews. She obviously care very deeply about what people think of her.

Strong agree. She has a deep catalog of great work. The latest album was, in my opinion, her worst. But that doesn’t mean the others weren’t excellent. I just hope she understands that and creates a better album next time. Doesn’t mean I hate her and won’t support good work.

I made a whole ten minute video that’s privated because my whole case with her teasing Debut TV is pretty much a cash grab. There’s genuinely no reason to rerelease an album written at 14/15. Not to mention vault tracks that are supposed to resonate with us but again, written when she was BARELY in high school. She’s a business, no longer an artist.
