That one is MIT, not a motivational reel. Real physical shape: built over years, not over two months in a gym. Your own apartment: at 35, not at 25. The person you stay with: at 28 and later, not at 18. It is worth asking where the other calendar came from at all. The man who got there young tells the story constantly, because while he is young it is still a story. The man who got there at 62 rarely bothers. By then it is simply his life, and nobody films a life. One version is loud and rare. The other is silent and ordinary, and we built our plans on the loud one. Being late is expensive in ways that are easy to miss, because none of it looks like a mistake while you are doing it. You sell early, since a slower exit starts to feel like proof you failed. You borrow on bad terms to buy back time you never actually lost. You quit in year three of a thing that needed year seven. Every one of those is a decision made against a deadline nobody set. Someone will say this is just comfort for men who are dragging their feet, and that is fair. An average hides the young ones, and the young ones are real. An average is not a permission slip either. What it marks is where the weight sits, and the weight sits far past the age most of us handed ourselves at nineteen. ... If the clock is what worries you, breathe out. The calendar you have been racing was never the real one, and the money you were about to spend beating it can stay where it is.
