The Medicine Peddler (Uirō) is a 1931 woodblock print by the Japanese artist Ōta Masamitsu, depicting a dramatic scene from the famous Kabuki Juhachiban (Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays). The artwork captures a Kabuki actor in the role of Soga Gorō, who has disguised himself as the Odawara medicine vendor Toraya Tōkichi to seek revenge for his father’s murder. Dressed in striking, ornate theatrical robes adorned with giant coin motifs and carrying a traditional medicine box on his back, the figure holds aloft a small container of uirō, a historic herbal cure-all.
