Plasmodium ovale RBC enlarged with fimbriated edges Schüffner’s dots Oval, fluffy gametocyte PREPARATION OF MALARIA BLOOD SMEAR A. THIN SMEAR Place a small drop of blood near one end of the slide Place the spreader slide at 45° angle and push forward Allow blood to spread along the edge of spreader slide Make a thin, even smear with feathered edge. Air dry B. THICK SMEAR Place 2–3 drops of blood in the center of slide Using the corner of another slide, spread in circular motion Make a thick smear (about 1 cm diameter). Air dry completely Do not make it too thick.
