@nightflightseverywhere: Sometimes what destroys a relationship isn’t the original mistake. It’s everything that happens afterward. Two people can genuinely love each other and still let pride, defensiveness, silence, and resentment turn something fixable into something that feels impossible to repair. One person is waiting to hear, “I understand why that hurt you, and I’m sorry,” while the other is busy explaining why they shouldn’t be upset in the first place. And suddenly the conversation becomes about who’s right instead of how to make things right. A real apology isn’t just saying sorry so the argument ends. It’s being willing to sit with someone else’s pain without immediately defending yourself. It’s acknowledging what you did, understanding how it affected them, and changing the behavior that caused the wound. And a deep conversation requires maturity from both people too. It means being honest without trying to punish each other, listening without preparing your comeback, and being willing to hear things about yourself that might be uncomfortable. Not everything can or should be repaired with one conversation, especially when trust has been repeatedly broken. But sometimes two people spend months missing each other over something that could have started healing if they had simply put their pride down and talked honestly. Sometimes moving on is necessary. Other times, what two people really needed was enough maturity to sit across from each other, tell the truth, apologize sincerely, and finally listen.
