My problem is the opposite. I straight up asked my daughter’s 1st grade teacher if she is a Regina George or a Gretchen Weiner. “No. She’s perfect at school.” Listen, you can be honest with me. I know her. I live with her. I will fix it, but I have to know what I’m targeting. “Nope. She saves it all for home.” Do I know where she gets it? Yes. Do I appreciate that she isn’t someone else’s problem, sure. But just once, I wish she’d let loose so I don’t look crazy.

i taught severe autism self-contained, you'd be amazed how so many parents response was, well they have autism. ok great lady, so does everyone here but we're all not throwing chairs.

“I don’t want to put intent on a 18 month old.” Said one mother when I told her her son was actively ruthlessly targeting a classmate after I watched him *intently* aim for that child three times in a row not 40 minutes before. By the time he was 24 months and we were a week from the end of the year we *FINALLY* got “you know he actively manipulates us?!??!!” Oh yeah ma’am been begging you to see that for literal months please tell me, what did he do for you to finally see it?!

As a classroom aide in a self contained special needs room….parents not believing us hits hard. We have your child for anywhere from 6-8+ hours a day, we are not plotting against you, we’re not working against you, we are not targeting your kids. Please understand that we barely have time for ourselves (especially if we are also parents) we are not going home and planning out ways to target your child. We are simply keeping you informed about how they did/acted for a majority of THEIR day. It is not our fault, we did not trigger them in anyway, and we did not make up the behaviors. Please treat your child’s classroom staff with respect, and kindness…we are not the enemy

Or they’re arguing with the principals who then back the parents and not their actual teachers. Kids need to have consequences for their actions and not having mom & dad kicking up a ruckus.

As a former teacher, married to a veteran teacher, with two young children—we always believe the teacher. And in front of that child, we take the teachers side & even when we don’t, our children will NEVER know. But as soon as your child hears you undermine them, the will no longer respect them because they’ve seen you not respect them. BELIEVE THE TEACHER! 👏

As a former room mom I’ve seen the way some teachers are to some kids and not others so that’s when I stopped believing them because is it a bias? If Joey is always talking and getting in trouble for it but Jenny isn’t getting in trouble and talks just as much or more what’s the real issue? So the best advice is offer to help in the classroom! Do the required work from the district to get in and help stuff folders or make copies or put up art work be involved and your kid won’t be an issue because they know you have an in with the teacher and they no longer feel like it’s separate

ALSO - As a former early childhood educator, I am ON YOUR KID'S TEAM. I am not bringing up the behavior to shame you, this is literally about your child becoming a functioning member of a community. And I am telling a parent because maybe there are things happening indicating bigger issues too. I know someone who was a victim of childhood EssAy - he was 9 years old, and acting out. His parents took him from doctor to doctor to doctor until 1 doctor got him to confide in him. I promise you, there are very few teachers who want less than the best for ALL kids.

Not my perfect angel baby. Nah - everyone has bad days, every kid struggles, and every kid can act differently at school than at home. The goal is cooperation of parents and teachers to raise good kids into good adults.

I about cried with a coworker today when we were told the parents who got contacted about in school suspension due to behaviors and both sets of parents were horrified at their child's behavior and completely understood our position AND said they would talk with them at home and follow through... last year? We would have gotten yelled at 🥴
