@bookishdogmamakate: I listed to the audio book Receipts From The Bookshop by author Katie Clapham. The author shares in this absolutely engaging and lovable memoir diary, the 13th year of her family owned independent bookstore in the seaside town of Lytham St. Anne’s in the UK. Month by month quick stories, impactful interactions, hilarious observations, and human gifts of kindness are shared with me as the listener. Also, the inner dialogue of the author/owner as she orders & unboxes books, brews a cuppa, discovers she is out of milk, forgets her keys, and deals with the weather. I already know, I knew half way in, that this book will become to me like Parks & Rec or New Girl are. I have watched them both 4 times through. Each time I catch something funny or moving that I missed. Or, that something in my life changed, & now the words hit different. That is what this book will be as I revisit it. Wildly clever, universally human, real life identification, with “characters” that we know…that we are. The humor, beauty, and challenges of real life. The experience of this book was like spending time with a sister or best friend who can always make me laugh simply by talking about their day. Not because they are trying to, but in the organic delivery of their descriptions I am having a giggle fest and feeling more whole after. Narrator Amy Drake is outstanding. I could listen to her tell me about the bookshop anytime. I wish she would do my outgoing phone message & my GPS directions. This sharing of a year in the life of a cozy, wonderful bookstore is exactly what I had hoped & so much more. It is warm, comfortable, joyful, honest…and now I can’t help wondering what bookshop & library staff think quietly of me as I make my rounds, lol. This is a wonderful tale for any book fan. Any “I’m just going in to look” person. Anyone taking the time to read a review. Definitely recommend. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing an advanced listening copy.
