@brighamofutah: Bear Lake is at least 250,000 years old, and could much older. It’s a very old lake (for reference, the Great Salt Lake is a leftover of a larger lake, Lake Bonneville, which formed about 30,000 years ago). Not only is it an unusually ancient for a lake, it’s the deepest natural lake in Utah by far- about 208 feet when full. In a land of scattered, occasionally warring communities with nebulous boundaries, and little or no infrastructure, the fur trappers known as “Ashley’s Hundred” ventured into unknown territory. The first man to go to Mars would be more aware of what they were heading into than these fur trappers who crossed the Rocky Mountains in the 1820s.
