Three days earlier there had been nothing temporary about it at all. On the morning of September 30, 1950, the Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer was steaming off Wonsan with USS Lyman K. Swenson, racing to help a downed B-26 crew, when she struck a floating mine. The blast tore open her forward hull below the waterline and left the bow hanging by little more than deck plating. What saved her was where the mine hit. It detonated beneath the keel, the strongest part of the ship, rather than amidships like the explosion that had crippled USS Brush just three days earlier off Tanchon. Damage control teams shored the flooding bulkheads, ferried the wounded to USS Helena, and backed the ship clear of the minefield under her own power. The one loss Mansfield never recovered from wasn't a sailor. It was Pohang, the ship's mascot dog, swept away in the blast and never found. Not a single crewman was lost, and the ship never carried another mascot again. Mansfield limped into Sasebo for this temporary bow, then crossed the Pacific to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington for a permanent one. She went back to the Korean coast afterward and earned five battle stars for that war alone.
