@boundbymemory: There’s something painfully sad about two people who might genuinely care about each other but slowly build a relationship around everything they don’t say. He struggles to express himself, so she starts translating silence into love. “He doesn’t say it, but I know he feels it.” “He’s not affectionate, but that’s just how he is.” “He doesn’t reassure me, but I know he cares.” “He never plans anything, but he’s going through a lot.” And because she understands his history, his fears, the way he was raised, or why vulnerability is difficult for him, she keeps lowering what she needs so he never feels like he’s failing her. Meanwhile, he starts believing she’s okay with what he’s giving because she keeps accepting it. That’s where understanding can accidentally become self-abandonment. Loving somebody through their struggles is beautiful. Not everybody grew up learning how to communicate, show affection, apologize, or express emotion safely. Sometimes a patient partner really can help someone discover parts of themselves they never knew how to access. But understanding why someone struggles doesn’t mean pretending their struggle doesn’t affect you. You can have compassion for the boy who never learned how to express love and still admit that the girl deserves to actually experience being loved. And eventually he has a responsibility too. “I’m just bad at expressing myself” can explain the beginning of a relationship, but it can’t become a lifetime exemption from effort. If she keeps telling you what she needs, learn. Try. Get uncomfortable. Tell her you miss her even if saying it feels awkward. Plan the date. Ask the question. Give the reassurance. Let her see what’s happening inside your head instead of expecting her to survive on clues. And she has to learn that requiring love in a form she can actually receive doesn’t make her demanding or less understanding. The saddest ending is when she finally leaves and that’s when he finds all the words he couldn’t say while she was staying. Suddenly he knows exactly how much she meant to him, exactly what he should’ve done differently, exactly how desperately he wants another chance—and she’s exhausted from spending the entire relationship translating silence. Sometimes love doesn’t fail because nobody cared. Sometimes one person kept saying, “Please show me,” while the other kept hoping, “Please just know.”
