I’ll never forget my first experience. I was like 13 volunteering at a horse ranch and because we couldn’t get paid the instructor would give us free lessons and things like that. The horse I learned how to ride on was an ex-barrel racer of 15 years, and I was just to the point of having “learned how to ride” (could tack up and ride out without supervision) and one day there were barrels in the corral.. that bitch took off like a bolt of lightning, like I’ve never seen her do before and all I did was hang on. That was the same day that the instructor came out stopped the horse and asked me if I was OK and when I was exhilarated and giggling and saying I wanted to do it again, she gave me personalized barrel racing lessons because I was “the first natural barrel rider she’d seen in years“ I just wish I would’ve had the money to keep up with riding as years went on. I haven’t ridden in years, but I yearn for nothing more than to be back in the saddle.
