📖 Bible Study: The Levite’s Concubine Judges 19–21 — When Sin Spreads Through a Nation ⚠️ A Difficult Story Judges 19–21 is one of the darkest accounts in the book of Judges. It contains violence, sexual sin, death, civil war, grief, and terrible decisions. The purpose of the passage is not to glorify the evil that happened. Instead, it shows what happens when a society repeatedly rejects God and does what it thinks is right. The book ends with the haunting statement: > “In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” — Judges 21:25, KJV That verse helps explain the entire story. --- 1. 📍 The Story Begins in Ephraim Judges 19:1–3 A Levite was living in the hill country of Ephraim. He had a concubine from Bethlehemjudah who left him and returned to her father's house. After some time, the Levite went after her to bring her back. He eventually found her and stayed with her father for several days. Bible Study Point The story begins with a broken relationship, but the situation quickly becomes much darker. The Bible is showing us a society where relationships, hospitality, justice, and human life are becoming increasingly corrupted. --- 2. 🏠 They Travel Toward Gibeah Judges 19:10–15 The Levite eventually left Bethlehemjudah with his concubine and servant. They came near Jebus, which was Jerusalem, but the Levite did not want to stay there because it was a city of foreigners. Instead, they continued to Gibeah, a city belonging to Benjamin. They arrived late in the day. But something disturbing happened: > “There was no man that took them into his house to lodging.” — Judges 19:15 Eventually, an old man took them into his home. 🔎 Important Contrast The Levite assumed that staying among Israelites would be safer than staying among foreigners. But what happens next shows how morally corrupted Gibeah had become. --- 3. 🌑 The Men of Gibeah Judges 19:22–24 While they were eating, wicked men surrounded the house. The text describes them as: > “sons of Belial” They demanded that the Levite be brought outside. The situation became extremely violent and evil. The household attempted to protect the guest, but the situation escalated terribly. ⚠️ Important We should never treat this scene lightly. The Bible is describing wickedness, not approving it. The events demonstrate just how far the people had fallen morally. --- 4. 💔 The Concubine Dies Judges 19:25–28 The woman was subjected to horrific violence throughout the night. By morning, she was found at the door of the house. The Levite discovered her there. The passage records: > “But none answered.” — Judges 19:28 She had died. This is one of the most disturbing scenes in Judges. And the Bible does not give us a happy ending. It gives us the horrifying consequences of unchecked evil. --- 5. 🕯️ The Levite Sends a Message Judges 19:29–30 The Levite returned home. He took the terrible action of dividing her body and sending the pieces throughout Israel. His message shocked the nation. The people who received the message responded: > “There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day.” — Judges 19:30 They realized that something had to be done. --- 6. ⚔️ Israel Comes Together Judges 20 The tribes of Israel gathered together at Mizpeh. They demanded an explanation from Benjamin. The Israelites wanted the guilty men of Gibeah handed over for punishment. But Benjamin refused. Instead, Benjamin prepared for war against the other tribes. The Tragedy A crime committed by wicked men in one city eventually became a national conflict. Sin spreads when it is protected instead of confronted.
