I had a good look through all the advent calendars in Tesco, hoping to find a standout option — unfortunately every single one of them contains palm oil 👎 Still, some are definitely better quality than others, and the difference really comes down to the cocoa content. Cadbury’s, unsurprisingly, came out as the weakest. Their cocoa solids are only 20%, which is actually below the level that allows it to legally be called milk chocolate on the front. And you can taste it — it’s just very cheap chocolate. Milk chocolate should be around 30% cocoa solids, and thankfully there are a few options that actually meet that standard. The Lindt Teddy calendar is a lovely one — 30% cocoa solids and it’s on Clubcard offer at the moment. The Kinder one is even slightly better at 32% cocoa solids, But the best I found was the Ferrero Rocher advent calendar. Some of the chocolates in it have 40% cocoa solids, and the dark ones go up to 50%. They’re also a good bit lower in sugar (40% sugar) compared to most of the calendars that contain around the 50-55% sugar. If you want the best option in Tesco, that Ferrero one is probably it. But I do know Tony’s Chocolonely do an advent calendar (does anyone know which supermarkets it’s in??) and I love them as a chocolate brand.. they are committed to fair labor & ethical sourcing and they use no palm oil! If you spot that one, it’s a brilliant option. And look — do we even need a chocolate advent calendar? For the last few years we’ve used a gorgeous wooden advent calendar at home with drawers I fill myself. It comes out every year, it’s fun, it’s personal, sometimes I add a fun activity to do that day, other days I pop a treat in, but it completely avoids the palm oil-and-cheap-chocolate situation and it’s reusable! But saying that if you’d like to pick up a chocolate one this year, these are the best ones I’ve seen! I must check Aldi and Lidl next to see if they have their own ones! Have you seen any there? I’d love to know x #sophiesswaps #cleverswaps
