Graham’s number is one of the largest numbers ever used in a serious mathematical proof. It is so unimaginably large that there is no practical way to write it out in ordinary decimal notation—not even if every atom in the observable universe were used to store its digits. Why was it invented? It appeared in a proof by Ronald Graham related to a problem in an area of mathematics called Ramsey theory, which studies the conditions under which patterns must appear.
