This magnificent Grade I listed Georgian hall near Doncaster has accumulated a whole collection of ghostly folklore, from the Grey Lady and a Victorian-dressed woman, to children reportedly seen and heard in the old basement classroom and a mysterious man said to appear beside the grand fireplace. But some of the most unsettling stories actually come from people who worked inside the building. Staff have reported seeing a young girl in period clothing looking out from a first-floor window, while footsteps have repeatedly been heard moving around the upper floors when nobody was there. One technician working in the attic even heard footsteps climbing the stairs towards the roof. He waited for whoever was coming to reach him, only for the footsteps to continue upwards. When he went to investigate, there was nobody there… and the roof door was locked. Then there is the story from when the museum first opened in 1967, when a security guard reportedly saw a figure dressed in 19th-century clothing standing on the roof, despite believing he was the only person inside. And in 2018, ghost hunters investigating the Hall photographed what appeared to be a mysterious handprint on an old blackboard in the basement, after hearing unexplained footsteps, scratching and banging during their investigation. None of these stories can be proven as supernatural, and that is where folklore gets fascinating: over decades, reported encounters, local stories and ghost-hunting investigations have all become part of Cusworth Hall's haunted reputation.
