People often struggle in their relationships because of fights, bad talking and the choices they make with their feelings. In the play *The Lighthouse Keeper’s Wife* by Charles J. Fourie the characters stay all alone on Robben Island. This isolation makes their loneliness and their personal problems even worse. Through Stella, Lamprecht and Plaatjies the play shows how being jealous feeling lonely and wanting to control others can break relationships and change who a person is. Stella is a woman but she is very lonely. She feels stuck in her marriage and trapped by her life on the island. Her relationship with Lamprecht is bad because they do not talk to each other and Lamprecht tries to control everything. Of talking about their problems their home is just full of tension. Stella feels a fight inside herself because she does not know if she should stay in an unhappy marriage or find a new life. Because of this Stella looks for a connection and freedom by talking to Plaatjies. Plaatjies is also a person who feels alone. This bond between Stella and Plaatjies shows how much Stella wants a friend and a way to escape. The way Lamprecht acts causes a lot of fights between the characters. Lamprecht feels unsure of himself. Gets jealous when he finds out Stella has been seeing Plaatjies in secret. Lamprecht chooses jealousy of trust and his need to control things leads to very scary actions. Lamprecht attacks Plaatjies. Even cuts out the tongue of Plaatjies. This shows how anger and jealousy can ruin lives. Also when Lamprecht destroys the boat of Plaatjies it stops Plaatjies from being able to leave. This makes the struggle for freedom sadder and causes terrible things for everyone. The conflict for Plaatjies comes from his dream to be free. Since he is stuck on Robben Island Plaatjies tries to build a boat so he can escape. This dream is something Stella understands because Stella also feels like a prisoner.. This shared feeling makes Lamprecht suspicious which leads to a very sad ending. As things get worse Stella begins to change. Near the end Stella starts saying the words as Plaatjies, like "Keeps building a boat." This shows how long periods of pain and c
