As someone who just got back from China for 4wks. Our first day in mainland in Chengdu, pop up out of subway (one of 100’s of exits -iykyk) and needed to find my hotel. Apple/Google not working but luckily I screenshot the map, I asked a local for help and within seconds we had 5 people all offering assistance. One younger guy spoke little English and figured out hotel. Helped us with bags and told us of his family having a street food stand. Needless to say we ate there for the night and offered a nice tip for raising their son beautifully. The mother was on verge of tears. 😭 my first interaction and hope it won’t be last.

Culture shock in Australia—Some Australians walk into public places without wearing shoes or sit on bus or train seat with shoes legs crossed. We can but kangaroo meat from local supermarkets. I can’t understand the culture but I respect

Culture can change, and habits can be learned. Give them some time. The Chinese have endured tremendous suffering over the past 100 years.

Not gonna lie. There are indeed a lot of rude Chinese in China. But we still cant say Chinese are rude.

pushing people around and cutting queues issue is much better now than in early 2000. Give it another 15-20 years and this issue will be resolved. Things was similar in Sg in 1950-70s and look how such issue is no more.

I think as westerners, we excuse ourselves too much. When I visited China I found myself admiring how on the subway Chinese people know how to hold their own space even if people bump into them. I found it hard getting off the trains and not letting people past or in as is so habitual here. They just hold their own space and charge forward 😂

That’s why learning other languages, learning other cultures, and communicating with locals are crucial to understanding different cultures from different perspectives instead of getting stuck in ur own cultural perspective.

Interesting... The whole of Asia and major parts of Europe does this too only rate in Germany, Netherlands and UK and Nordic regions... The US, UK and Australia misunderstand these social cultural norms without trying to understand it ... thank you for explaining .
