I worked at this Hollywood Video from 2003 to 2008. It lasted until 2010, when its new owner, Movie Gallery, filed for Chapter 11 and closed stores. I drank a lot of Sobes in this building. We adapted during the Netflix by mail era with our own membership plan, which was overly complicated and full of asterisks to exclude the NEWEST releases and that just confused and frustrated customers who signed up for it. But Redbox was the real killer. When I left in 2008, it cost $3.87 to rent 1 new release. You could pickup the same movie at Redbox for $1 while you were already at another store you had to go to. We didn’t stand a chance. You also couldn’t just rent a movie without us being forced to try to upsell you on renting another movie and buying candy, AND popcorn, AND a 20oz drink. If we didn’t upsell enough, management would cut our hours. I got punished with a 6 hour work week once for not being able to convert enough $3.87 transactions into $11.99 + tax transactions.
