The sweating sickness wasn’t a hantavirus. The epidemiological data doesn’t match. But it did occur during wet, hot, muggy summers and autumns then travelled along waterways to other wetlands and their people. It never traveled to Ireland or Scotland where wetlands aren’t hot & muggy. This indicates a vector of mosquitoes, minges or ticks. It is consistent with the highest mortality rates among healthy young men including the wealthy and soldiers who spend their time outside. If a wealthy man went home when he fell ill everyone in his house would die too so it was highly contagious.

it sounds like maybe something in the food if the poor died in lower numbers

I wonder if it had to do with eating swan. They would cook it and then put it back together with the feathers and head 😳 but it fell out of favor around that time too

Sounds like either poisoning from the wealthy getting water from a different source from the poor. Could have been lead poisoning if something caused the lead from their lead pipes to suddenly get suspended in the water. based on the spread though I would guess a bacterial infection. The poor had herd immunity from exposure to a less deadly version of the bacteria. The rich never got exposed to this lesser version because of living conditions. My guess would be an anthrax like bacteria spread through animal wool and clothing. The poor would've worked along the livestock and built an immunity or died off very slowly. The bell curve of disease peaked when it reached it reached the populous that never had exposure to livestock. Viruses are awful and can spread fast but bad bacteria that can kill, kill fast and a healthy microbiome with antibodies are your only hope.

Of course it was a VIRUS. And viruses mutate…. which means it could mutate to something is not harmful. That’s how viruses 🦠 work.
