If you’ve been following our journey from the beginning, you probably know that we’ve maintained a no-screen policy for Bella since day one, and we’ve stuck with it ever since. Without relying on screen time, we've found other ways to keep her entertained while dining out. We always bring along a small bag of toys, and when needed, we take turns walking with her outside the restaurant while waiting for the food to arrive. One of the activities she’s really taken to lately is coloring. I’ve been teaching her how to stay within the lines, and recently, she’s started to grasp the concept. It’s been amazing to watch her focus so intently, and she really enjoys the challenge of mastering this skill. It’s such a rewarding feeling when we can actually enjoy a meal together without screens, knowing she’s just as engaged in an activity that helps her develop. Watching her concentration and pride as she colors is heartwarming. As for screen time, it’s generally recommended that children under 2 avoid it altogether. For kids over 2, limiting screen time to about 30 minutes a day is suggested. Of course, Bella occasionally encounters “accidental” screen time when we’re visiting friends, or when we’re at a restaurant or mall where there’s a TV. Other than that, we don’t offer it at home, and the best part is that she’s genuinely happy without it and has never asked for it, so we’re content to keep it that way for now. When will we start introducing controlled screen time? Maybe around 3.5 years or later—we’re not entirely sure yet. For now, we’re in no rush and plan to maintain our current approach for as long as we can. I do want to stress that this isn’t meant to criticize anyone who chooses to incorporate screen time. Every family is different, and parenting is all about finding what works best for you and your child. This is simply what we’ve been doing, and we hope it might inspire anyone who is keen to take a similar path.
