I imagine someone was making desperation soup and got ashes in it. maybe as filler. and as they tried to rinse the sticky mess of their hands, noticed it worked as a cleaner 🤷♂️😆

Stephen Wood :
The ancient Celts used soap made from ash and goat fat. Goat fat was the best to use because it contains a high proportion of a particular molecule (I don't remember which). If you used a different fat, then the process takes longer because the molecule has to be synthesised as the fat breaks down.
When the Celts first met the Romans, they thought the Romans were really stinky and dirty. Despite the existence of Roman baths, they didn't use soap, but, rubbed oils into their skin which would then turn rancid in the heat.
