Trump first floated the change on Truth Social a day earlier, as trade tensions between the United States and Canada escalated following the breakdown of negotiations and the introduction of new tariffs. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes and straddles the US–Canada border, with New York on its southern shore and the Canadian province of Ontario to the north.
