After 21 races, the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship came down to one final race at Yas Marina Circuit. Verstappen and Hamilton entered Abu Dhabi level on points, with everything coming down to whoever finished ahead. Hamilton started P1. Verstappen started P2. And from the moment the lights went out, it looked like Hamilton had control. Lewis got the better start and took the lead into Turn 1. Mercedes controlled the race while Verstappen struggled to stay within striking distance. Initially, the lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen were not allowed to unlap themselves. Then race director Michael Masi instructed five lapped cars to pass the Safety Car, leaving Verstappen directly behind Hamilton for the restart. One lap. One final lap. One championship. The Safety Car came in. Hamilton led. Verstappen was on fresh soft tyres. And then... TURN 5. Verstappen attacked. Hamilton defended. Max stayed alongside. And eventually Verstappen completed the overtake. MAX VERSTAPPEN WAS WORLD CHAMPION. After 22 races, the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship was decided on the final lap of the final race. But the controversy didn't end there. Mercedes protested the result, and the FIA later acknowledged that the procedure surrounding the Safety Car restart had not been applied exactly according to the regulations. Michael Masi was subsequently removed from his role as F1 race director, with the FIA introducing changes to race control after the Abu Dhabi controversy.
