You can’t draw a horse from memory if you don’t remember what a horse looks like

I love that seeing a horse for the first time has in fact improved your ability to freehand a horse

But how are you going to internalise the perfect horse if you don’t use reference photos for the first 50 drawings

Maybe you should alternate between following a reference one day and then memory the next. Because the progress has been immense since using references

Not sure if tutorials are allowed for this challenge, but the Spirit dvd had a special feature with one of the artists showing you how to draw Spirit and I used to watch that over and over, he makes a lot of really good observations about horse anatomy.

I’ve learned a lot of great artists suck without a reference

the point of a reference is not to memorize the image but to study the shapes that make up a horse's anatomy :^)

It might be better to draw lots of horses with references first and then you can remember better??

A huge part of drawing well is drawing what you see rather than what you think you see. Thats why using references and drawing from life are so important, especially while your developing your ability see the world in shapes and contours.

for you to draw a horse from memory you need to draw photos of horses from real life as a way to study

You don’t have the long term memory files to draw a horse just like that. You need to look at horses for hours and study their bodies by drawing them from reference over and over again.
