Children’s Counsellor here: I’d say something similar to this: “Grandma loved you and your sister very, very much. She did want to be with you. She was very sick, and her body was hurting and could not get better. The doctors couldn’t make her body better. Grandma was allowed to choose medicine that helped her body stop working and helped her die peacefully, because she was suffering so much. She did not choose to die because she didn’t love you or didn’t want to be with you. She loved you right until she died, and nothing you or your sister did made this happen.”

My dad recently passed away and he was very close with my oldest son which is 3 and he asks question all the time about where his poppy is. I just say “he is in the stars he is always watching over you i also let my son light a candle every night and he tells his poppy about his day”

Maybe you could say her body was tired. She was old and that’s what can happen to old people? 🤷‍♀️

It is true, that is the truth, although I was told, tell them age appropriately — she was tired, she was sore and she couldn’t do it anymore so she passed away, it has nothing to do with us, her body just gave up, I feel like telling him that she didn’t want to be here and she wanted to die might confuse him and when he is upset or angry maybe he will confuse it and tell you he wants to die? Idk so confusing with kids but you’re doing such a great job mama

Probably not appropriate to be talking about this while he’s sitting behind you and the conversation is not age appropriate. All he needs to know is that she was sick and expand further on the details when he’s able to properly understand.

Could you just explain that her cause of death was the illness that made her eligible for VAD?

my love… i’m so sorry this was the case. i wouldn’t even say she chose it, rather it was her final option and she may have been at peace with it xx i’m sure she would’ve wanted all the things myles wanted too!! he’ll understand when he gets a little older, it’s a complex feeling to sympathise with. but as long as he feels loved, that’s all that matters🥰

I’d just explain that she was unwell and that she was able to choose to pass away peacefully which is a lot nicer for everyone especially her, before she got too sick and was in too much pain, and she didn’t choose choose to be sick and she didn’t choose to miss out on her grandbabies growing up, sadly her illness was too much for her and was unable to be cured (fixed), I don’t know if that makes sense but always ensure that she didn’t choose to not meet Remi, she would have love Remi like she loves you and always will ☺️and now she’s an angel in the sky, always watching from above! Hope it goes well, kids have so many questions

I’m so sorry for your loss, I am currently dealing with the same thing, my mum had cervical cancer and she was approved for the VAD route but she passed the day away before the procedure, I have told my son, who she was with everyday as we lived together I have said that nanny has gone to heaven to fly with the angels and every time you wave up at the sky she will see you/hear you

I genuinely don’t know how to talk to my 3yo about my brother. She doesn’t remember him as he passed away when she was 3m old to suicide and I’m in the same boat 😭 they’re so little

Always tell the truth in an age appropriate way! They are incredibly smart and can comprehend more than we can even begin to imagine! 💗

I just feel like it’s not age appropriate to discuss her choosing to go. Knowing my kids I would have originally just explained she died because she was sick and explain further when their older.

if she was in pain then thats not wanting to die. Tell him she did want to be there but she couldnt live in her body anymore.

When my daughter was 4, My Nan passed away and then a few month later, our dog died and then 2 months later my sister died by taking her own life. My daughter knew that Nan died from being older, our dog died from old age too but she was always so confused about my sister as she was only 32. Now my daughter is 9. I’ve had 2 more children since then and she now explains to them that her Aunty Sissy loved her so much but she knew that she needed to be in heaven more than she needed to be on earth 🥺 grief is forever, but the more we talk about it with them, the more it becomes normal. It’s also such a special moment where they can talk about it so freely 🫶🏼🫶🏼
