Some common symptoms I see in my patients⬇️⬇️⬇️ These symptoms on their own doesn’t necessarily mean someone has cancer, so it’s important to rule out all possible causes. But if they are persistent, unexplained, or worsening, they deserve attention. The body often gives you signals when something isn't right. If a symptom is persistent, unexplained, or progressively worsening, it is good to get evaluated! There are many things we can do when cancers are caught early 💪 1. Unexplained rapid weight loss. Losing weight without changing your diet or exercise habits can sometimes occur because tumors increase the body's energy demands or alter metabolism. Cancer can also reduce appetite and lead to muscle wasting. 2. Increased vascularity (especially in the breasts). Some breast cancers stimulate the growth of new blood vessels (a process called angiogenesis) to supply nutrients to the tumor. While increased vascularity can also occur with normal hormonal changes and many benign breast conditions, new or unusual vascular patterns on imaging may warrant further evaluation. 3. Sudden-onset diabetes. New-onset diabetes can occasionally be an early sign of pancreatic cancer. Tumors in the pancreas may interfere with insulin production or release substances that impair glucose regulation. Most people with new diabetes do not have pancreatic cancer, but sudden changes should be evaluated in context. 4. Persistent bleeding. Bleeding that doesn't have an obvious cause—such as blood in the stool, urine, persistent vaginal bleeding, or coughing up blood—should always be evaluated. Depending on the source, persistent bleeding can sometimes be caused by a tumor disrupting normal tissue. 5. Poor wound healing or persistent itching (without a rash). Some cancers and chronic illnesses can interfere with normal immune function and tissue repair, making wounds slower to heal. Persistent itching without a visible rash is uncommon but can occur with certain blood cancers, liver disorders, or other systemic conditions. 6. Difficulty swallowing or persistent digestive issues. Ongoing bloating, changes in bowel habits, persistent indigestion, difficulty swallowing, or abdominal discomfort have many possible causes, but symptoms that persist or worsen should be investigated rather than dismissed. 7. A persistent cough or hoarseness. A cough or hoarseness lasting more than several weeks, especially without a recent infection, deserves evaluation. While often caused by reflux, allergies, or viral illness, persistent symptoms can occasionally indicate disease affecting the lungs, airways, or vocal cords. 8. Persistent fatigue. Fatigue that doesn't improve with adequate rest can have many causes, including anemia, thyroid disorders, infections, autoimmune disease, and cancer. 9. Night sweats or unexplained fevers. Recurring fevers or drenching night sweats may occur with infections, hormonal changes, autoimmune diseases, or certain cancers such as lymphoma. Persistent symptoms without an obvious cause deserve medical attention. 10. Loss of appetite. A persistent loss of appetite or feeling full quickly can occur with many gastrointestinal conditions, but it may also be associated with cancer-related changes in metabolism and inflammation.
