i tend to gravitate to “well at least i got out alive” and i’m still trying to work through those feelings of self invalidation—what has sadly helped though, is that when i just talk about what happened to me and certain instances of abuse, the level of horror people have expressed validated for me that i wasn’t exaggerating, that it really is that evil to inflict abuse the way/unhinged level my ex did, and that i wasn’t crazy or complaining for nothing. and even after all that, there’s still that small voice inside of me that questions myself because i was always questioned or demeaned for years in that relationship 🤷‍♀️

My cousins experienced a different type of abuse (familial trafficking) I grew up in an extremely violent home. As adults we realized that we were measuring our abuse against the other’s and in both cases were seeing the other person’s abuse as worse than our own. In reality there is no way to quantify our abuse and it was terrible for all involved.

This was actually a huge hurdle to my healing process. My abusive family would constantly tell me what they didn’t “wasn’t that bad you’re just sensitive”. But I knew it was bad, so this constant invalidation of my experience made me cling tighter to my anger and injustice over it. It has been so hard to let go of that.

Something I did was thinking if we got through something things would get better. After his job training program it will get better. After he gets the job it will get better. After we get a new place it will get better. Once we're on the same shift it will get better.

I kept telling myself "well, he hasn't hit me so it could be worse". Then I started saying "I wish he would hit me so at least then it would be done and I can go to sleep". After he raped me I told myself "if I had just given it to him he wouldn't have done this so it's my fault". Finally I looked at myself in the mirror and said "You are going to die if you don't get out" and I left. It's been 2 years and I still hear his voice in my head calling me names and telling me I'm a bad mom. Sometimes I still wish he would have hit me so I would have left sooner

I did a work placement in a domestic violence team 6 months after I started dating my ex. learned about the power and control wheel etc, but with all the horrific things id seen and heard such as a woman have to get warned by police she was at risk of being murdered and watching her father begging her to come stay with him because he didnt want to see her in a casket, I couldn't see how my own situation was abuse for a very long time

I graduated abuse from the entire familial unit as a kid, just to.get tr@ffiked as an adult. I'm also neurodivergent and it literally took strangers who noticed the signs of abuse, and got me out. They have become like family and let me live with them after they rescued me. it was one of their blood relatives who was one of my many abusers. she would make me change my clothes right in front of her & say really gross things to me, intentionally set up situations for men to put their hands on me, barely feed me or let me sleep, make me go everywhere with her out in public, and make me hand my phone over to her regularly so that she can make sure I'm not talking. I felt crazy explaining all this to her family, but for once they believed me, kicked her out of the family & off the property, and basically friend+dopted me into the family. Some days I still feel crazy and still can't believe it happened..

I didn't realise until I was in my 20s that it wasn't my fault. I thought I was bad.

Taught from birth my life is fine because others have it so much worse than me. Fast forward to years after ex attempted to murder me and my own kid told me "It wasn't that bad Mom, you could still breathe enough to scream." We are trained to shut up and take more. Not shutting up and never going to take anymore. 🖤

Because we’re convinced that abuse only looks one way and if our experiences don’t match it, then we can’t possibly be being abused.
