On average, we’re exposed to a menstrual product for 5 years - and 11,000 menstrual products in our life. The vagina is highly vascular and permeable, acting as a perfect interface for absorption. A 2024 systematic review of 15 studies (testing tampons, pads) has found that menstrual products contained measurable levels of endocrine disrupting chemicals including phthalates, phenols and parabens. The cumulative exposure to each toxin is not fully understood, so the full impact on an individual is not known. But researchers recommend that brands should be writing clearly on their packing if they contain endocrine disrupting chemicals. But because of concerns, some newer manufacturers specifically state they do not use these - and advertise this feature as a selling point. Phthalates: Added to plastics to make them more flexible. They can disrupt or interfere with the same receptors as sex hormones, and can bind to the same receptors as estrogen. Phenols: Found in pads, tampons or menstrual cups and are used as preservatives, within fragrances, adhesives, or within plastics. They’re used to prevent microbial overgrowth and are known to have a chemical structure which can mimic estrogen. Parabens: a type of synthetic preservative used to prevent mould, yeast or microbial growth. Can be found in pads, tampons, menstrual cup washing solutions. Marroquin et al.
