the essay thing is so dumb. there should just be a minimum requirement as far as GPA and then the gov ensures there are enough universities to meet the applicants

I can't agree more. I have complained to NIH about their need for trauma porn in graduate Fellowship applications when the candidate doesn't have a perfect undergrad GPA. It's crazy. And yes, you have to understand the game and know your enemy in order to win.
