@dontflagmebro: The Umayyad Caliphate was founded in 661 and became the first great hereditary Islamic dynasty. Ruling from Damascus, the Umayyads transformed the early caliphate into one of the largest empires the world had yet seen. At its height in the early 8th century, Umayyad rule stretched from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa across the Middle East, Persia, Central Asia, and into parts of the Indian subcontinent. This map uses modern flags to show the present-day countries whose territory overlapped with that enormous realm. The Umayyads expanded trade, administration, and infrastructure across three continents, while Arabic became increasingly important as a language of government. Their era also left major architectural landmarks, including the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The dynasty was overthrown by the Abbasid Revolution in 750, but one surviving Umayyad prince escaped to Iberia and established a new Umayyad state in Al-Andalus, allowing the dynasty’s legacy to continue for centuries. #UmayyadCaliphate #IslamicHistory #MiddleEasternHistory #HistoricalMaps #Vexillology
