I can't get over the fact that you have an 18 year old son when you look 25!

See, I’m a pediatric therapist, it’s ALL I think about and it’s why I don’t have kids. I’m very aware of the risk I’d be assuming when choosing to have kids. When I tell people to think about whether they accept this risk before having kids they look at me like I have 3 heads, because everyone thinks it won’t happen to them until it does.

My son regressed horribly right before his 3rd bday. We were already pregnant with my daughter. Had we known how bad it would be with my son, we would have never had a second. Luckily, we didn’t know because she’s such a light. She’s neurotypical. I love my son, but people considering not having a 2nd because of the risk, I totally see you.

So my husband and I always wanted 3-4 kids. When my son was diagnosed level 1 (before age 2) I was already pregnant again. I’m thankful now that we were already expecting before knowing my oldest was autistic. My 2nd son has some “stereotypical” signs of autism but I’ve been told he may not get a diagnosis. But regardless, having at least one kid on the spectrum is reason enough for me to say no more kids lol

Unpopular opinion but lumping all autistic people on an enormous spectrum was a bad idea. Level 1 and Level 3 are different universes!! They need such different support and they deserve to be treated as the different things they are.

My sons neuro told us it’s a 10-15% chance of a second child being autistic. We were already one and done but we’re definitely 1000% done

Just out of curiosity, did you do genetic testing with your first?

I don’t have an autistic child, but I work with autistic children and have a medically complex, type 1 diabetic child myself. I would never take the risk of having another child again. The heartbreak and anxiety you go through as a parent can be so debilitating and stressful. Whether is a developmental disorder or physical health issue, every single parent I’ve met in this position is burnt out.

I can complete understand... I have similar thoughts w my level 2 autistic 5yo son. Thinking I kinda know how to handle it now but level 1 and 3 are soooo different.

I have 2 sons with autism and they were the first in our family tree to get diagnosed. But I think my husband has it too. I think it’s been around for years and it’s just now being diagnosed. Our sons are level 1&2. But if they ever have children it could be a level 3 or none.

We have a level 1 that is 16. His social struggles are like nothing I’ve ever seen. We had 3 more kids before we found out. Our 7yo hasn’t been diagnosed ASD, but I am confident he will be diagnosed level 2 and does have a significant developmental delay (4yo at this time) and also severe ADHD (the worst I’ve ever seen). He may need support all of his life. I am so worried about their future. I’m not sure if we knew from the beginning we would have continued to have children. We are attempting to purchase some sort of acreage in preparation that they will both either live with us for their lifetime, or we will put homes on our property for them if they are able to live on their own with assistance. Nobody thinks it’ll ever be them. 🥺

Same babe. I don't regret my youngest but I didn't know it would be so different from his siblings. You're a good mom, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

My oldest is level 2 and my youngest is 1 year old with a chromosomal duplication that is linked to intellectual, developmental disabilities and autism/adhd so it remains to be seen what he will do

Yes!!! I had my son at 30 and was still just so naive! I truly believed healthy kids were a guarantee. 🫣

My sons nonverbal autistic level 3 and 2. I think it was easier for me that he was my first child but after having my daughter two years later, I didn’t realize how much harder he is.

I think many people are in your boat or have their kids close together before the oldest even have a diagnosis. I knew when my son was two and decided to be one and done.

Also with twins one can be typical and one can be autistic.

I’ll never forget waiting for my daughter’s results and being so worried they’d tell me she doesn’t have autism. (Denial idk lmao) She was diagnosed level 3 😂 it was validating but shocking
