If you're athletic I promise you can pick up any sport at any time. All these clubs want you to think it's too late, it's never too late.

If you are 7” tall, have a long wingspan, can jump out of the gym, but only have average hand-eye coordination, high-level basketball will find a place for you. There are like 20 guys like this in the NBA. None of these guys could sniff being good at another sport.

Tough to pickup basketball late unless you are a big guy whos athletic. The shorter you are the more skilled you have to be and it would be tough for a guard to pickup the sport late.

If your kid is less naturally gifted, then yes they better start early. If your kid is a natural athlete, they can start at just about any age and with a certain amount of concentration and coaching can be competitive quickly. Travel ball and AAU are business models for profit, your favorite pro athletes from your childhood did neither and still became legendary. A good bit of the arguments are just parents defending their financial investments. The real reason why the kids can’t pick up some of the sports late is because soccer, baseball and AAU basketball all are gatekept through clubs and pay for play opportunities. If there were more rec leagues in these sports then more kids could start late.

Nah, you can’t pick up basketball late anymore. If you don’t start playing by 7 or 8th grade it’s over.

I think soccer is hard to pick up late. Even good to average players usually start around 5. Most of us just aren’t used to doing skill things with feet.

If you have a 6’5” and above - you can start your senior year… (exaggerating)…

I was being a bit hyperbolic. I think for the average HS athlete (not counting outliers where a kid is extremely tall) it's way easier to pickup football your junior year compared to baseball and basketball. If you are like 6 ft tall and never dribbled or shot a ball it's going to be hard to contribute. You can contribute on the football field.

I dare say wrestling is one thats harder to get good at and be competitive starting late. Sure, you have those freak specimens that just figure it out, however thats the exception not the rule. Even professional mma fighters will tell you anyone can pick up striking fairly quick, but it takes years to learn ground work and grappling and actually be able to apply it on people who are also very well versed in grappling.

Basketball is one of the few sports you can practice a lot of it with minimal money, equipment, space, or even other people. Obviously it’s still really hard to be greatly successful, but it has an advantage there over hockey or baseball or swimming.

My daughter ultimately chose to pursue Softball, but I’m convinced that her foundation on Gymnastics helped her overall athleticism. Her body awareness and her ability to adjust very quickly has made all the difference in her success.

Technically any sport can be taken up late and kids should be encouraged to try a sport at any point. I think young youth should "try" as many sports as possible before specializing because they'll gain skills to translate to other sports
