That's it. No maple. No brown sugar. The box shows a steaming bowl drizzled in golden syrup. The product inside is oats, white sugar, salt, and an undisclosed flavouring engineered to taste like maple. Quaker's own website says "maple flavor" — not maple syrup. The word "flavor" is the tell. The "Fiber & Protein" version is worse — it adds maltodextrin, artificial flavor, caramel colour, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, and soy lecithin. Two artificial sweeteners and a synthetic dye in a product marketed as a health food. On top of all of this, Quaker oats tested positive for glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup — at 1,300 ppb. Taiwan recalled 62,000 kilograms of Quaker products over contamination concerns. Chlormequat — a growth chemical linked to reduced fertility — was found in 92% of nonorganic oat products, including Quaker. A homemade version needs oats, a teaspoon of real maple syrup, and a pinch of brown sugar. Cost: pennies.
