O tragedie unică prin amploare s-a întâmplat în munţii Himalaya: un gheţar s-a prăbuşit, a blocat cursul unui râu care, după ce s-a strâns extrem de multă apă în spatele barajului astfel format, s-a revărsat asupra localităţilor din vale. Odată cu puhoaiele au venit bucăţi uriaşe de gheaţă, bolovani, copaci şi noroi. Au distrus aproape tot în cale.
