@dariusryankadem: We often look at a moment like this and say, “She’s such a kind child,” as though kindness is simply a character trait a child either has or doesn’t. How does a child develop kindness? She thought flexibly, tolerated his rejection, understood his perspective, communicated clearly, regulated her frustration, and adapted when her first solution didn’t work. All of those worked together. These capacities didn’t guarantee kindness. They gave her access to a kind response. So when a child doesn’t act kindly, don’t immediately make it a judgement about their character. They may still be developing these capacities or simply unable to access them in that moment. This is just one example of how these things come together, that's why im going to hold a free live workshop tomorrow and show you how to support your child in developimg kindness and empathy inside my private community. Go to my link in bio, join the community with a 7 day free trial and attend the workshop.

Yeah but as an older daughter don’t let her absorb endless frustration and always have the little brother have his way because that will hurt her relationship with YOU.

once again the daughter has to be flexible and absorb the emotions of the brother while brother just learned that if he screams loud enough everyone else will move for him

I feel so sorry for her she had to sacrifice herself for her sibling, that’s how the elder child never learns to say no even if it makes them uncomfortable 😔 😔

wow this was a huge fail in my opinion. You taught him he can scream in someone's face and get what he wants. you taught her she's has to give in and accept being screamed at and her taking up space doesn't matter.

Every day I’m reminded of how early the patriarchy is taught.

but wouldn't that just lead to the younger child constantly using crying to get what they want?

My only concern is that a tantrum got him what he wanted and I didn’t see any attempt to direct him towards not having tantrums for small problems like this in the future. Thoughts?

You don't allow a tantrum to dictate this. His option is to sit in a different trolley or not sit in one at all.
Now his tantrum has been reinforced by getting his own way, you've now set a precedent that screaming and shouting produces results. Terribly handled.

so, he throw a tantrum and got what he wanted at the expense of the child, who was well-behaved.

Why are you making her move, even if she offered, why are you teaching her she's the problem here and not the son screaming and having a tantrum. This was not her job to fix 😭
