@realisticrecruiting: Referrals are not a magic trick to getting hired at a job. They can’t help, but all of the stats you’ve heard about things like the hidden job market and needing a referral to get hired are mostly made up or misinterpreted. Most referrals carry no weight because they don’t come from anyone who matters. But that doesn’t mean you need a referral from the CEO to get hired either. #jobsearchtips #careeradvice #jobsearching
Honestly, if someone I respect says to me “hey, I used to work with this person and they were amazing, I want to work with them again.” That’s worth 100x them doing well on the interview.

As a hiring manager, Unless your dad is the CEO, a referral just gets the resume to the top of my pile and a decent read through instead of a quick 10 second filter decision to put it in the look at further or file it in the round filing cabinet. For former coworker / former manager it’s an instant through to the interviews. Only nepo referrals have been an “instant” hire

Referrals are like opinions you gotta be careful who you vouch for too

I gave two people referrals & they both made me look bad by underperforming in the interviews. Never again. I don’t want people at the company thinking I’m scrub adjacent 😂

well I can’t even get passed the AI resume reader so no one can see my referral. Guess I’ll just make it somehow lol

It’s so funny if I said referrals are guaranteed to get a job. The comments would be like that’s not true. I get a referral and I can’t get hired. But when I say referral is not a guarantee to get the job, the comments are sure it is!

I feel like the LinkedIn referral/ any referral is better than nothing and as it greatly increases chance a application skips over the automatic screens and actually gets viewed. it can go nowhere but a least a human looked at your cv

“Most referrals aren’t that good” is an expectations problem or base rate neglect, as nearly all the ones listed are better than the baseline of no referral and submitting the application yourself.

Hard disagree. Referrals for entry level jobs are basically automatic hires in most cases.

Do you have tips on how to get past the AI resume checkers. I’ve gotten my past work from referrals, but I’m wondering if I’m doing anything wrong with my resume or applications that is making the AI not push me forward.

Butler in the rough :
70% of jobs are done by word of mouth. That leaves just 30% that get hired by CV’s. It’s all about warm intros. They outperform cold outreach time after time.
