39 Rep Chest Workout - age 57, July 16, 2026, 2:10 PM Ever since I got treated for stage 3 colon cancer in 2011, this is how most of my workouts are structured. Up until I was diagnosed and rushed into emergency surgery to have my colon removed because the tumor had ruptured, I was 215 lbs. and could handle heavy weight and high volume barbell and kettlebell sport workouts. It took me a year to recover from surgery and end chemotherapy, and after that things were never the same. Even though I was 205 pounds and muscular, my work capacity and ability to recover plummeted, and I would get injured easily. Apparently the type of chemotherapy I had attacked and degraded the collagen and connective tissue in my body, and by 2014 I had injured both knees doing things like jogging and bodyweight squats. Without realizing what was going on, I thought I was just being a pussy so I tried to push through and work harder, but eventuallyI realized that this new version of me was not temporary and needed to be trained differently. Although the erosion of my collagen cut my strength and endurance in half while doubling my recovery time, it also had the unexpected effect of deepening the delineation between my muscles and leaving me “ripped” the way you see in old people. In order to warm up my tendons and muscle fascia safely while conserving enough energy to lift as heavy as possible AND recover, I need to start with very light weights and increase them in small increments for low repetitions. I stopped training for more muscle and more strength a long time ago, and now I try to maintain certain benchmark weights for a given lift: Deadlift -315 lbs. Squat - 225 lbs. Dumbbell Chest Press - 90 lbs. Pull Ups - 10 reps Kettlebell Clean & Jerk - 70 lbs. If I can hit these standards a few times within a year then I hold onto my current body weight of 195 lbs. and am able to do all the other things in life. Aloha
