Australia does NOT give PR simply because you studied there. A practical route can look like this: 1️⃣ Choose a CRICOS course linked to a skilled occupation 2️⃣ Graduate and, if eligible, move onto the Temporary Graduate visa (485) 3️⃣ Get skilled work in your occupation 4️⃣ Complete the required skills assessment 5️⃣ Build your points/profile 6️⃣ Pursue 189, 190, 491 or an employer-sponsored pathway if you qualify Fields worth investigating because Australia continues to report persistent shortages include: 🏥 Nursing + allied health 📚 Teaching + early childhood education 🤝 Social work/care-related professions 🛠️ Construction + skilled trades ⚙️ Selected engineering + science occupations Tech can still work, but don’t assume every IT course automatically gives you a strong PR pathway. Australia’s 2025 shortage data showed several ICT occupations had moved out of shortage. VERY IMPORTANT: The 485 graduate visa is usually only available if you are 35 or younger when you apply. Exceptions apply to research master’s/PhD graduates and some passport holders. Current 485 stay periods are generally: 🎓 Bachelor’s: 2 years 🎓 Master’s by coursework: 2 years 🎓 Master’s by research: 3 years 🎓 PhD: 3 years 🛠️ Eligible diploma/trade route: up to 18 months Eligible regional graduates may also qualify for an additional 1–2 years. For points-tested PR, 189/190/491 require at least 65 points, but 65 does NOT guarantee an invitation. You also need the right occupation, skills assessment and usually must be under 45 when invited.
