It's not about stubbing your toes, it's about supporting your back. Those 3 inches allow you to stand close enough that your spine can be in a neutral position while you work. Bookcases and washing machines don't need toe kicks because you don't stand over them for long stretches of time several times per day.

as someone who cooks this is a TERRIBLE trend.....leave the toe kicks and just add decorative pieces that look like furniture legs on the ends

Nope. Toe kicks serve purposes. Function matters. I’m sick of this.

It’s not about stubbing a toe - it’s about ergonomics and preventing back/shoulder pain having to lean forward awkwardly while kneading bread or rolling out pie dough, etc.

How many people stand so close to your cabinet that your toes are actually under that thing

It's this line of thinking that gave the world needing to use a touchscreen to adjust the air vents in cars. 🤮

You need them. You aren’t working on the top of a washing machine or a dresser. You are working standing close and working on top on a counter and reaching over to retrieve items like utensils, food, plates etc.space some wood out to be flush with ur cabinets where ur toe kick is. Now use it that way for an entire week. You will hate it. Ur feet will constantly hit.

It’s about using your counters to work. The function isn’t just about standing closer, it’s about being able to stand and work for several hours at a time without bending your lower back or causing fatigue in your legs from the stretching,

As someone who tried it without the toe kick and then had the company come back to make a toe tick…you NEED the toe kick. Your back NEEDS the toe tick. Find another place for a fun detail or find a way to make the toe kick interesting

The side of my island doesn’t have it and it drives me crazy and I love to cook! If you want your kitchen to function as a kitchen that cooks food, leave the toe kicks alone!

Yes it’s for ergonomics but also to be moppable- that trim piece is usually first to get water damage and it’s much easier to replace that vs the face of a whole cabinet

I love to cook, and I would rather be able to stand just a smidge closer to my prep area. Also, I'm obsessed with these toe kicks that have built in step stools, drawers, that type of thing. I vote we keep them.

I can confirm toe kicks are indeed needed. Just try and use a kitchen without them. It’s horrible.

It’s primarily an ergonomic feature. You are not standing by a washing machine for 20 minutes chopping up veges on top of it. The toe kick a) protects your back, and b) prevents cupboards getting stuck open or closed due to uneven floors.

Toe kicks are 100% necessary, at least as a taller person! They save me from having to lean way forwards. Especially at the sink, where often I’m reaching to the back of the counter depth.

As a woman with size 12 feet, this is the first thing I disagree with you on. Tow kicks are necessary.

No, I spend a ton of time in the kitchen and toe kicks are absolutely a necessity. You can pry them from my cold dead feetsies.

so we dont usually stand at and do similar things with washer/dryer. it's up and down and in and out and often I'm sideways or sitting on the floor. my son did have a bed that went to floor and yes I constantly stubbed my toes on it making the bed. we are standing at counters and stiles for hours a day and it's better for body mechanics to be as close as possible and the larger your feet the further you are from it, or having turn your feet out. the only way it would work is if you have a very large counter overhang. however washing dishes and cooking will still be an issue.aometimes design is practical and there is a reason
