part 337 | think about your youth compared to now. watch a child with a cardboard box. or a stick. or twenty minutes alone in a garden. the material is nothing. the experience is complete. there is no gap between what they have and what they want, because they have not yet learned to want something other than what is in front of them. they are not making do. they are genuinely here. leopardi is not being sentimental about childhood. he was one of the most rigorous pessimists in the history of philosophy. what he is doing is diagnosing a process. as consciousness develops, as reason sharpens, as knowledge accumulates, the capacity for simple presence is destroyed. the adult knows too much. he knows that the cardboard box is just a cardboard box. he knows that the moment will end. he knows the vastness of what he does not have and cannot have. and so even abundance produces a kind of blankness. everything is available. nothing is enough. this is leopardi’s central argument across thousands of pages of the zibaldone: that civilisation, reason, and knowledge, which are supposed to increase human happiness, actually dismantle the only conditions under which happiness was ever naturally possible. the ancients had illusions. we have information. we traded one for the other, and the exchange was not in our favour. the child has not yet made this trade. the man has made it and cannot unmake it. the question leopardi leaves hanging is whether knowing this changes anything. he thought it probably did not. but he kept writing anyway, which is its own kind of answer. giacomo leopardi was born in recanati, a small hilltop town in the marches of central italy, in 1798. he spent his first twenty-four years almost entirely in his father’s vast library, teaching himself greek, latin, hebrew, and multiple modern languages, destroying his health and eyesight in the process. he was plagued by spinal problems that left him in near-constant pain and gave him a curved posture that made him a target of mockery throughout his life. the zibaldone — meaning roughly “hodgepodge” or “miscellany” — is a notebook he kept from 1817 to 1832, running to over 4,500 pages. it was published posthumously in 1898. the first complete english translation, by seven scholars, appeared in 2013. it is one of the strangest and most remarkable documents in european literature: a single mind, working at full stretch, thinking through everything. leopardi died in naples in 1837, aged 39. #leopardi #philosophy #darkacademiaaesthetic #existentialism #dailyquotes
