@teabeforetantrums: Do you think any of these are true? We get told A LOT about what America/Americans are like but honestly, now that I live here, most of these couldn’t be further from the truth. What’s the biggest stereotype you think Americans get?! 👇 #britinamerica #ukvsusa #lifeinamerica #americanstereotypes #backtoit

Europe gets away with being extremely xenophobic towards others.

As an American.. why do Europeans care if we travel or not so much 😂 Its never crossed my mind to judge someone on if they’ve left their home country

Also, non-Americans (and many Americans, unfortunately) rarely consider Native American history and culture in these conversations. Yes, if you consider our history only from the beginning of colonization it may be young comparatively, but there were rich, vibrant indigenous communities with their own languages, cultures, cuisines, and traditions throughout America before then. They still count and matter.

I’m living in France, and the locals love to tell me that we Americans don’t eat anything except McDonald’s, and that all our food is fake and processed. I’m from California. We have fresh produce available all year from local farms, and some of the best restaurants in the world of every cuisine imaginable. Not a single restaurant in my city here would stay in business in LA or SF. The grocery stores here have very little variety of vegetables, and much of what they do have is bruised and floppy. Meanwhile people consume an insane amount of carbs and milk fats, and eat fatty fast food more often than anyone I knew in the CA. Yes there’s a few ingredients that are legitimately better quality in France, but sheesh are they ignorant about the reality of life outside their borders

If I told non-Americans that Americans are required to drink a liter of soda a day, a lot of them would honestly believe it.

People think America doesn’t have culture because stuff that starts in America that would be considered culture often becomes global, so people don’t think it’s American. Take jeans, for instance

What’s really irritating is how they have these stereotypes, and when we try to tell them they’re wrong, or greatly exaggerated, they never listen. Why do people who don’t live here, and usually haven’t even visited, think they know more about us/our country than we do? 😅

I feel like Europeans judge Americans as it relates to Europe, and act like it’s canon; which is dumb

Europeans are extremely xenophobic in my experience. I’m not sure what makes them think it’s appropriate to take it all out on Americans. (Besides a lot of their stereotypes are based in racism and classism).

We live rent free in Europeans minds. And we don't care what they think about us. But you are correct on these stereotypes. Just not true.

The United States actually has a higher rate of college graduates as compared to the UK, it’s close but the US is still a little bit higher.

American sarcasm is more self deprecating and British sarcasm is directed at someone else. This also plays into the perception that Americans are dumb because we will play dumb for a joke & Europeans take it completely seriously. Like telling an English person “say hi to the queen for me” - we don’t actually think you know the queen, but a lot of Brits take it absolutely seriously

I think the only misconception of Americans that genuinely bothers me is when people call American friendliness fake. It feels like projection because I’m sure if they behaved that way, it would be fake. But for Americans, friendliness is so deeply embedded in our culture that even introverts are significantly more open and warm here. One of our foundational myths is that of the Pilgrims and the native Americans sitting down to break bread together and how the first settlers would have died if not for the help of the native people.

I would love to hear you talk about humor in the US vs Europe. From my experience, uk banter is often teasing. Why do they think we don’t get sarcasm??? So curious!

Hi, also Brit living in the US here. Your no.1,2,3 are all based on personal anecdotal experiences. - 1. There are absolutely regional and local education shortfalls at the school level and higher education (uni) is expensive, though the same has become true in the UK. 2. US is objectively more dangerous to life. It’s not just the violence and shootings, death rate on roads is 5x that in the UK. 3. Again, objectively true that Americans travel less internationally. But also true that it’s a huge country with lots to see within its own borders so, kinda a wash there I think. Main difference is that Americans have much less vacation time. - Frankly your whole take seems to be, if it’s not happening in front of my nose, I don’t think it’s true!

the culture thing is probably in place because Europeans view us as 1 country and that it is all 1 thing. but each state is similar to an entire country in Europe and each has a unique culture but also a lot of similarities.
